2012-2015 Ryan White Comprehensive Plan
The purpose of this Plan is to develop a multi-year comprehensive and responsive system of care that addresses the needs and challenges of the community. The Comprehensive Plan is a living document that serves as a roadmap for the provision of the Ryan White Part A continuum of care that will be used to guide discussions and decision-making over the next three years.
The Comprehensive Plan reflects our community's vision and values regarding how best to deliver HIV/AIDS services, particularly in light of cutbacks in federal, state, and local resources. The planning process reflects a diverse perspective from members of the Broward County HIV Health Services Planning Council, affiliated and unaffiliated consumers, HIV service providers, representatives of community-based organizations, and other stakeholders.
The Comprehensive Plan provides an opportunity to achieve the vision of an “ideal” system of care through review of needs assessment data, existing resources to meet those needs and the review of barriers to care. The Plan will also aid the Ryan White Part A program in responding to changes in the epidemic, identification of individuals unaware of their HIV status and linking them to care, and to address the unmet need of those aware of their status but not in care. The Comprehensive Plan also considers the yet unknown implications to the Broward County service delivery system resulting from the implementation of the Affordable Care Act.
To download the Comprehensive Plan, please go to www.brhpc.org/files/2012-2015 Broward Comp Plan 1.4.13.pdf
I encourage you to review and comment on this plan as it is the planning document that will be utilized to develop the Ryan White Part A continuum of care. The Comprehensive Plan will be updated periodically to reflect any changes in the local epidemic that affect the service delivery need of the Broward County Eligible Metropolitan Area.

Meth and Men
Meth & Men South Florida
http://davidfawcett.typepad.com/david_fawcett/meth_and_men_south_florida/
David Fawcett PhD, LCSW, has been honored with the "Who's Who in Florida Prevention Award" in recognition of his leadership in both substance abuse and HIV/AIDS prevention. The Florida Office of Drug Control named individuals recognized for their leadership at the annual statewide Prevention in Florida Conference in Orlando in early October. This award acknowledges the accomplishments and dedication of individuals and groups within Florida’s prevention community. Dr. Fawcett's nomination specifically recognized a decade of leadership working to strengthen individuals and families, especially within the LGBT community.
Dr. Fawcett has worked on a number of community projects, including serving as Chair of the South Florida Methamphetamine Task Force, which fostered community partnerships to address the methamphetamine crisis through training of professionals and creation of an infrastructure for prevention and treatment. He was a founder of Meth and Men South Florida, a program of Sunserve, which continues to provide sliding-scale individual and group therapy for substance abuse within the LGBT community. He also serves on the Board of Governors of the Broward County Commission on Substance Abuse; the Clinical Advisory Board of Sunserve; and recently was Program Co-Chair of the 2010 National Gay Men's Health Summit, a five-day event that drew nearly 500 people from around the nation to address concerns related to the health and wellness of gay men.
Dr. Fawcett frequently makes presentations on topics of HIV and substance abuse both locally and nationally, most recently at the US Conference on AIDS. He has been in private practice and created and now facilitates the "Connections" group for gay men at Fusion, a drop-in center funded by the Broward County Health Department. The weekly "Connections" group is open to all and provides a rare opportunity for gay men to discuss a variety of topics, including body image, self-esteem, intimacy, relationship skills, stress reduction, and many more.

NeedyMeds.Org - http://www.needymeds.org/indices/contactus.htm
The mission of NeedyMeds has been, since its inception, to make information about assistance programs available to low-income patients and their advocates at no cost. The website, NeedyMeds.org, is the face of the organization.
Databases such as Patient Assistance Programs and Disease-Based Assistance, government programs and other types of assistance programs are the crux of the free information we offer online. In response to the growing needs of advocates and patients, NeedyMeds recently added a free clinics database to its website and started an online forum, NeedyMeds Forums, for patient advocates.

Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve heard that the L.I.F.E. Program® (Learning Immune Function Enhancement) talks a lot about “cofactors.”
What are those? A cofactor is anything that affects your immune system and, ultimately, disease progression. People living with HIV can develop and maintain HIV+ health. They can greatly increase this potential by managing certain life issues, called “cofactors” in the L.I.F.E. Program®.
Each cofactor has the potential to speed up or slow down the progression of HIV symptoms or AIDS in an HIV+ person. Each can help or harm the immune system. Each can increase or decrease the frequency of safe or risky behaviors. Each can enhance or reduce adherence to help routines, including medication schedules.
Cofactors in the L.I.F.E. Program® include:
Body
- Primary health care – Develop open communication and collaborative relationship with medical professionals
- Body care – Develop good breathing, eating, exercise, sleep and water intake habits
- Toxins and germs – Develop honest awareness of your exposure to toxins and germs, including drug use
- Health routines – Overcome obstacles to adhering to your personal medical and body care routines
Mind
- Coping skills – Develop strategies for adapting to sudden or distressing life changes
- Grief and depression – Develop ways to express what you feel and to seek support.
- Self-assertiveness – Say “yes” to things you want and “no” to the things you don’t want.
- Sustained survival stress – Manage stress, develop coping skills and learn to relax better.
- Beliefs about disease progression – Develop awareness of your deep beliefs; develop realistic hope
Spirit
- Trusted support and self-disclosure – Reduce stress through open, honest communications with others
- Safe behavior – Avoid activities that could expose you or your partners to illness
- Life goals – Establish realistic short and long-term goals regarding your life purpose
- Altruism and spirituality – Act on your concern for the well being of others; engage in spirituality
What happens during the program?
Sessions are conducted by trained professionals and assisted by peer counselors, who present practical information from medical research. During group you will participate in creative, experiential exercises to help the learning process. You will participate in large and small group discussions. In addition, you’ll meet one-on-one with trained health counselors to address the cofactors you want to improve in your life.
Will this program conflict with my regular medical care?
Absolutely not. The L.I.F.E. Program® is designed to complement and assist your primary medical care. We believe the best treatment for HIV infection is a combination of (1) quality medical care, including antiretroviral medicine when appropriate and (2) immune-enhancing psychological and behavioral habits. Participants in the L.I.F.E. Program® simply discover new ways that disease progression can be replaced by health progression.
How strong is the medical research that supports the L.I.F.E. Program®?
Our program is based on over three decades of scientific research in medicine and health, especially the field of psycho-neuro-immunology (PNI). PNI is part of a broader medical field called mind/body medicine. Hundreds of studies have demonstrated that psychosocial forces can influence immune function in people living with HIV/AIDS, making a potential difference in symptom onset, rate of disease progression and survival time.
What’s this “mind-body medicine” thing I keep reading about?
Psycho-neuro-immunology (PNI) is a 30-year-old medical specialty that studies the interactions between emotions, the brain and the immune system. PNI is a well-established branch of medical science, with published research studies that number in the thousands. This research demonstrates that psychological issues can have a significant impact on immune system functioning. The mind truly can influence immunity, illness and health.
How can I take part?
Contact the PALS Project today! Talk with a L.I.F.E. Program® facilitator about how the program might benefit you. If you decide you want to participate, a facilitator will help you complete an initial survey. New sessions will start soon. Please join us.
What if my medical provider has a question or concern about my participation in the L.I.F.E. Program®?
We believe that physicians and other health-care providers should be aware of your interest or participation in our program. Please encourage your doctor to visitwww.shanti.org/life/index.html to learn more about the design of the L.I.F.E. Program®. Your doctor can review the For Health Professionals area on this website.

Tuesday’s Angels
Founded in 1993, Tuesday’s Angels Inc. began as a charity to give emergency financial assistance to those with HIV/AIDS and has evolved into a nonprofit organization that today countless people in the Fort Lauderdale seek for assistance.
ALL applications have to come through the case workers of all the other agencies, like Broward House or Care Resources. The assistance is requested from Tuesday’s Angels by those case workers when they have exhausted all other resources for helping the client….for example, a client needs rent money or will evicted. Tuesday Angels will accept applications to pay the landlord directly and the client has to come up with the difference or the landlord has to agree to accept the payment in full to prevent eviction. Clients can get assistance only twice per year total. The goal is to help in emergency type situations and assist client in helping themselves.
